As the larvae grow, they start to go through a series of changes, kind of like a transformation. This process is called metamorphosis. Their bodies start to take on the classic shape of moonfish, and their fins and other body parts develop further. During this time, they’re still in the open ocean, and they have to keep moving and feeding to survive.<\/p>\n

It takes a long time for moonfish to reach maturity. Scientists estimate that it can take anywhere from a few years to over a decade for moonfish to grow big enough to reproduce themselves.
